10 Tips to Simplify Thanksgiving Hosting

  1. Set up a holiday “mise en place.” Organize all your tools, pre-measured and prepared ingredients, and a recipe card on individual sheet pans so you have each recipe organized and ready to go.
  2. Keep your mashed potatoes warm in a slow cooker and gravy in a thermos.
  3. Free up fridge space by temporarily storing anything you won’t need on Thanksgiving day in a large cooler.
  4. Pour hot water into another large cooler, let sit for 5 minutes, drain, and line with foil. Then use it for anything you need to keep warm as you wait for guests to arrive.
  5. Buy La Brea Bakery bread ahead of time and freeze it for a day or two. Thaw on the counter or bake from frozen at 350 degrees: 5 minutes for rolls or 10 minutes for loaves. 
  6. Cheesecake, pie, cake, and many other desserts can be made or bought ahead of time and thawed at room temperature on the day of your event.
  7. Keep bread fresh by placing it in a paper bag or reusable bread bag. Avoid plastic as it holds in moisture, allowing mold to grow faster. 
  8. Chop fruits and vegetables a day or two in advance and store them in airtight containers in the fridge.
  9. Gravy can be stressful to make on the spot, so prepare a base using broth, herbs, and roux a few days ahead. On Thanksgiving Day, simply add turkey drippings, adjust seasonings, and heat to serve.
