Patty Melt

Patty melt sandwich cut and stacked on wood cutting board

Perfect for a cozy lunch or dinner, this sandwich is crispy on the outside and savory and melty on the inside.

Ingredients
  • 2 slices La Brea Bakery New York Rye Loaf
  • 3 teaspoons plus 1 tablespoon butter, divided
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 ounces freshly ground beef, formed into a patty (roughly the size and shape of a bread slice)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup yellow onion, halved and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon water
Preparation
  1. In a small pan or skillet, melt 1 teaspoon of butter over medium heat until foaming. Add both slices of bread and cook until golden brown on one side. Remove from the pan, place cooked side up on a plate, and top each piece with a slice of Swiss cheese. Set aside.
  2. Using the same pan, increase the heat to high and add another teaspoon of butter. Season the burger patty with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Once the butter is melted, add the patty to the pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on one side. Flip the patty, reduce the heat to medium, and cook for another 3 minutes or until it reaches your desired doneness. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same pan over medium heat, add the onions, 1 teaspoon of butter, and the water. Cook while scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. When the onions are soft, remove from heat.
  4. To assemble the sandwich, evenly distribute the cooked onions over each slice of bread on top of the cheese. Add the burger patty and close the sandwich.
  5. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter to the pan. When melted, place the sandwich in the pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on one side, or until golden brown. Flip the sandwich and cook the other side until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Remove and serve warm.
